Exhibition Opportunities

Are you an artist intrigued by the concept of temporary public art? Are you interested in creating art that has a life outside the gallery, projects that are visible to all who live and work in Milwaukee? If so, consider working with IN:SITE.

The opportunities are constantly evolving and IN:SITE wants to offer them to all artists, emerging or established.

In its curatorial role, IN:SITE connects artists with locations appropriate for temporary public art. Currently, IN:SITE is requesting proposals Park East Corridor project. The deadline for applications is May 6th, 2009 and the installations are to be mounted by August 24th, 2009.

Park East Corridor

Project Overview:

In February the City of Milwaukee Arts Board, chaired by Alderman Michael Murphy, voted to fund IN:SITE creating a plan for temporary installations in the Park East Corridor in 2009. If the plan is approved in May, installations might begin as early in June, with a focal point of activity occurring August 24-30. IN:SITE's goal for the project is to invite pedestrians, bikers, people who ride the bus, and drivers to explore the Park East Corridor. Seven Milwaukee artists came together in a March brainstorming session to help determine the framework for the project. The question the artists want all the art to address is, "What is the value of this land?"

Project Funding:

If approved May 12th, the Milwaukee Arts Board will supply the majority of the funding, however other donors have come forward, including Ruvin Development Corporation. All the artists for this project must be local. Stipends will range between $500 and $1500, depending on the nature of the project. The stipend includes the cost of materials.

Neighborhood Description:

The Park East Corridor is comprised of 64 acres and 29 blocks. The area became a focus of development after Milwaukee took down the 1971 Park East Freeway spur in 2002-2005. At the Milwaukee Department of City Development website, you can access maps of the area, its history, and lots of information about the development plan for the Park East Corridor.
