PAST !! Exhibition and Mentoring Opportunities PAST !!

Are you an artist intrigued by the concept of temporary public art? Are you interested in creating art that has a life outside the gallery, projects that are visible to all who live and work in Milwaukee? If so, consider working with IN:SITE.

The opportunities are constantly evolving and IN:SITE wants to offer them to all artists, emerging or established. Stipends for projects run from $200 to $500, depending on the scale and length of the project.

In its curatorial role, IN:SITE connects artists with locations appropriate for temporary public art. Currently, IN:SITE is requesting proposals for two locations in the Sherman Park neighborhood for installation in the Spring of 2008. Proposals are due by February 1, 2008 and the installations are to be mounted before May 3.

Project Overview:

IN:SITE and the Sherman Park Community Association are collaborating on temporary public art installations for Spring 2008 and Fall 2008. Each cycle (both Fall and Spring) will have a temporary public art project which includes community involvement. In addition, one project will feature an emerging artist from the Sherman Park area who has been mentored by IN:SITE.

Project Funding:

Funding for the art is through a matching grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board (WAB) with funds from the Challenge America program of the National Endowment for the Arts. The money from the WAB, supported in part by funds from the State of Wisconsin, is matched with funding through SPCA’s involvement in the Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative (HNI) sponsored by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.

Neighborhood Description:

Sherman Park is a racially, ethnically, and culturally diverse residential neighborhood. There are 42,000 residents who call Sherman Park home and who have chosen to be homeowners and tenants in this heterogeneous community. SPCA has a reputation for involving residents and organizing residents around proactive issues.

If you are an emerging or established artist and you are interested in creating a piece of temporary public art which includes community involvement for Sherman Park, please review the information below and, if possible visit the site.

Sherman Park covers four city blocks, bounded by Burleigh on the north, Locust on the south, Sherman Boulevard on the west, and 41st Street on the East. The area in the park under consideration as a site is south of the Mary Ryan Boys & Girls Club. Please see the |map of Sherman Park|. The brown park building on the map is the location of the Mary Ryan Boys & Girls Club. The HNI Task Force considers the park the heart of the neighborhood and wants the art to invite people to utilize the park more often.

A mandatory element of this project is the inclusion of community involvement. You, the artist, will create the temporary public art, but your project must utilize the neighborhood in some fashion. Stipends for projects run from $200 to $500, depending on the scale and length of the project. The stipend amount will take into account the community involvement element. For this site please note the following:

  • A key issue is how to have art in the park that won’t damage the park or get in the way of other uses.
  • IN:SITE encourages using the park paths for the art installations.
  1. Since the paths cover lots of space, make sure the proposal includes specifics about what part of the paths will be involved.
  2. IN:SITE is open to curating more than one path project.
  • Please use materials that can last for two to four months.
  1. A possible approach would be to use stencils and spray chalk.
  • IN:SITE welcomes projects that aren’t on the path, however, artists should carefully consider factors like safety and vandalism.

Please think inside the realm of TEMPORARY public art, outside the permanent public art box. Please visit our |Project Archive| and our |Resources| pages for other examples of temporary public art. Your project could be a mural, sculpture, or a video. Since the stipends are not large, think about an appropriate use of time and materials.

To apply, please fill out the form below and submit it along with 2-5 samples of your past work and a visual description (a working drawing, a computer mock-up or a photograph of a maquette/model) which describes your proposed project. Proposals are due by February 1, 2008 and the installations are to be mounted before May 3. Please submit the application information by:

  • email submission using the link below
  • "snail" mail submission to:

  • P.O. Box 151
    Milwaukee, WI 53201

Please note that the application form is available as an MS Word document or an Adobe Acrobat PDF. Both can be edited digitally and submitted by email or printed for "snail" mail.

Mentoring Opportunity

Temporary Public Art Mentoring Project

Spring 2008

Sherman Park Community Association office site

3526 W. Fond du Lac Avenue
Milwaukee, WI

directions

During the winter of 2007, IN:SITE will mentor an adult artist and assist them in creating a temporary public art project for the Sherman Park neighborhood. The artist must be someone who has not created public art of this type before and resides in the Sherman Park area.

The artist will have the opportunity to create a piece of temporary public art at 3526 W. Fond du Lac Avenue. This location is on a very busy street. As the image above indicates, the building front (where the Sherman Park Community Association has its office) is quite bland. IN:SITE and the HNI Task Force sponsors are looking for an “eye-catching” project for this location.

Artists interested in being mentored by IN:SITE in creating a temporary public art project for the SPCA office should attend the meeting on Saturday, January 5, from 2:00-3:00 p.m. at Sherman Perk Coffee Shop at 4924 W. Roosevelt. The informational meeting will be hosted by artist and IN:SITE associate Carrie Hoelzer and IN:SITE chair Pegi Taylor. Hoelzer and Taylor will discuss the mentoring process and speak with artists one-on-one. The selected artist will receive a stipend of between $200-$250 and will sign a mentoring contract with Hoelzer.

To apply, please fill out the form below and submit it along with 2-5 samples of your past work. Proposals are due by February 1, 2008 and the installations are to be mounted before May 3. Please submit the application information by:
