• 1:30-2:30pm – Reception at Sherman Park Community Association (3526 W. Fond du Lac) with all the artists discussing their work. In addition, Claire Odishoo, Director of the Northwestern Mutual Art Gallery at Cardinal Stitch University, will talk about Eriks Johnson's wall painting.
• 3:00-4:00pm – Artists will be at their installations to answer questions. A map of the installation sites will be available at Sherman Park Community Association and Sherman Perk Coffee Shop.

Fall IN:SITE Projects

September 2008 - March 2009

IN:SITE and Sherman Park Community Association (www.shermanpark.org) are pleased to continue VibranC, a collaboration of two six-month cycles of temporary public art in Sherman Park. All three fall projects in Sherman Park feature the use of untraditional materials. For the first time, IN:SITE will be hosting a team of artists from outside the United States for the "Public Heat" installation.


IN:SITE has curated temporary public art in the Gateway of West North Avenue since May of 2006. For this fall, there will be a new wraparound wall painting by Eriks Johnson. Johnson, who lives near the wall painting, will continue adding to "Road Closed/Path Open" for up to six months.


Funding for VibranC is made possible by a matching grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board (WAB) with funds from the Challenge America program of the National Endowment for the Arts. The money from the WAB, supported in part by funds from the State of Wisconsin, is matched with funding through SPCA’s involvement in the Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative sponsored by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. The Canada Council for the Arts paid for Davidson's travel to Milwaukee.


The Last Word, a national secretarial service in Milwaukee since 1976, is sponsoring Johnson's wall painting on North Avenue.

Stephanie Davidson and Georg Rafailidis' "Public Heat" Project

Artists Stephanie Davidson and Georg Rafailidis (founders of the architectural practice "make-do" at www.we-make-do.net) will be coming from Germany to install "Public Heat." Davidson and Rafailidis have been collaborating with GreenHeat Technologies in Utah to alter their "powerblankets," primarily used at construction sites to help cure concrete, so they can be mounted outside Sherman Park Community Association to keep people warm in the winter. Davidson says, “Public art can be a public service. People can snuggle up to the façade during the chilly Milwaukee fall and winter." IN:SITE thanks GreenHeat for working with Davidson and Radailidis to modify the “powerblankets” and providing a discount.

Bridget Frances Quinn's "I've Just Seen a Face" Project

Bridget Frances Quinn, now living in Texas, will be mounting "I've Just Seen a Face." Quinn will determine the wording for every month on two changeable letter signs. IN:SITE associate Yesh Pavlik will coordinate gathering responses to prompts Quinn will determine for Perk and elsewhere in the vicinity for this community involvement project. "I will be using text to create brief glimpses of people who live in the neighborhood," says Quinn.

Kamryn K. Boelk's "I’ll take one of each; wrap it to go" Project

Milwaukee County Parks and the Mary Ryan Boys & Girls Club will be partnering with VibranC for Kamryn K. Boelk's project spanning almost 200 feet along a chain-link fence in Sherman Park. Teens at the club will help sort, prepare, and then wrap recycled plastic bags into the fence. Hundreds of plastic bags will be used to depict a panoramic horizon line dotted with natural symbols. A highlight to the project is a flock of plastic-wrapped birds created by the youths from the club. This will be local artist Boelk's first piece of public art. She is an IN:SITE mentee.

Eriks Johnson's wraparound wall painting at this corner will cover a span eight feet high and sixty feel long. Johnson's goal is to blend diverse linear elements to create a visual moment, "when our surroundings are radically changed and for an instant we can imagine ourselves existing in a world refreshed, vibrant, and un-oppressed."
